Padstow May Day – (‘Obby ‘Oss Festival!)

Let’s talk about the festive May Day at Padstow, which takes play on 1st May and where the spotlight is on the Padstow ’Obby ’Osses. They are adorable, round creatures designed to resemble real horses. There are two of these lovable ’Osses: the Red (Old) ’Oss and the Blue (Peace) ’Oss. Both are eager to dance through the lively streets of Padstow, accompanied by their own ’Oss parties. In a playful turn of events, each party dances in front of their charming beast, a fun ritual fondly known as teasing. When May Day arrives, Padstow turns into a haven of joy as the streets brim with cheerful crowds.

The buildings are beautifully adorned with fresh greenery, including young sycamore trees that signify the arrival of spring. As the day progresses, the unique “Day Song” fills the air. The lyrics and melody, exclusive to Padstow, celebrate the onset of summer and the rich heritage of this quaint Cornish town. The most exciting part is when the ’Oss symbolically “dies” in the chorus, dropping to the floor as the teaser attempts to bring him back. And just like magic, the ’Oss springs to life at the end of the chorus, dancing wildly into the crowd. As the celebrations wind down, the ’Osses are lovingly put away as their devotees serenade with a traditional song, beginning with “Farewell, farewell my own true love”.
