National Fishing Month! - Meadow Lakes

National Fishing Month!

It’s National Fishing Month! This August we encourage all our guests and visitors to escape to nature and enjoy the health benefits it brings to both the mind and body! Enjoy a few fun facts about our native lake fish!

Fun Facts

  1. Roach – They are a member of the carp family and have a long life span of least 23 years or even more. Can be found in all our lakes!
  2. Rudd – Rudd prefer clear waters rich in plants. Common rudd are sought out by anglers as they can be a difficult and finicky species to catch. An average Rudd’s lifespan is around 17 years. and they eat up to 40% of their body weight. Can be found in our Willow, Kingfisher & Heron Lake!
  3. Perch – Most perches live for only five to six years. One exception when it comes to the perch’s fast and efficient movement is its excessive egg production during spring, which makes the fish extremely fat and rather slow-moving. Can be found in all our lakes!
  4. Bream – While they are smaller, these fish can use their gills to filter feed for microorganisms if food is scarce. However, as they grow larger their gills become too separated from one another to trap the plankton. Can be found in all our lakes!
  5. Trout that live in different environments can have dramatically different colorations and patterns. Have been found in our Willow Lake!
  6. Carp – Lives between 15-50 years in the wild but the oldest living carp was about 225 years old. And they are bottom feeders, so they tend to make the water muddy when they feed. Can be found in our Heron, Kingfisher & Oak Lakes!
  7. Tench – Spend their whole winter buried in mud. And also referred to as doctor fish because their skin contains an antibiotic that protects other fish from falling ill. Can be found in our Kingfisher & Oak Lake!
