Things to do in Cornwall at Christmas time
Harbourside villages illuminated in twinkling lights, tasty festive food, and fabulous events at the region’s biggest family attractions – there are plenty of Christmas events in Cornwall this year!
Cornwall is a magical place all year round, but it’s Christmas with it’s enchanting experiences in every nook and cranny of the county that make it such a special time to visit…
Christmas at the Eden Project
This year, fill up on festive cheer at Eden’s Christmas experience. The Med Biome will be filled with beautiful lights and their glitter ball will make you feel like you’re in a snowglobe! In the Citrus Grove, they’ll have an 18-piece Christmas Big Band*, playing all your seasonal favourites, as well as some original scores – creating the perfect atmosphere to come and enjoy a mulled wine and a mince pie with your loved ones.
Head to the Rainforest Biome for a more reflective experience – enjoy the enchanting atmosphere of a beautifully-lit tropical paradise, with more focused displays around key areas, including our gorgeous illuminated waterfall.
*Eden will be open until 8pm, with the Big Band playing from 5pm, on the following dates: 3-5, 10-12, 16-23, 27-30 December.
Marvel at the Christmas Lights
Cornwall’s Christmas lights are quite simply, spectacular. The pretty fishing village of Mousehole is best known for its Christmas lights. The tiny winding streets are illuminated with a blaze of colour, while down at the harbour, the water reflects the twinkling lights beautifully. The displays are inspired by Cornwall’s maritime heritage, with sea serpents, fishing boats, and whales to name just a few, and Mousehole isn’t the only place to get into the Christmas spirit – Cadgwith and Angarrack also have impressive displays each year too!
There is no big switch on this year, but you can still look forward to the beautiful illuminations lighting up the village and harbour. The lights will be on each evening between 5pm and 11pm from Saturday 11th December 2021 until Sunday 2nd January 2022.
Boxing Day Charity Swim at Charlestown
A dip in the sea on Boxing Day has become something of a tradition in nearby Charlestown, running since 1991 and organised by Charlestown Rowing Club. Whether you fancy taking part or prefer to stay a bit warmer watching on from the beach, it’s sure to be a memorable experience – and they’ve raised over £24,000 for charity since it began!
To take part in the Charlestown Boxing Day swim, swimmers must be over 11 years old and raise at least £10 in sponsorship which will be donated to the chosen charity of the year.
The event is supported by CTC Medical Services, St Austell Coastguard and St Austell Community Fire Station, so you’re in safe hands!
Get into the Spirit of Christmas at Cotehele
Head over to Cotehele (National Trust) and see the beautiful house dressed for Christmas. Each year, Cotehele’s gardeners create a 100ft garland to adorn the Tudor Hall, using thousands of flowers grown on the estate. It’s a tradition that’s been running for 60 years (the first garland was created in 1956) and local choirs perform under the garland throughout the Christmas period. For the children, there’s the chance to meet Father and Mother Christmas in their grotto too!
