Quieter Cornwall
With the summer crowds gone September gives visitors the chance to explore a calmer Cornwall and visit popular places with less people. You could visit the foodie destination of Padstow, popular Newquay or the cultural haven of St Ives. You can explore the streets and famous attractions at the beginning of Autumn.
Enjoy the last of the summer with this September Music Festival. For three days in September the beautiful port of Looe in South East Cornwall delivers a big weekend of music, entertainment and culture. Looe Music Festival takes place in the heart of town with the main stages on the beach and around the bustling harbour offering the perfect weekend to end a great month of events in September. Headliners for 2018 include The Stranglers and The Waterboys.
There’s still plenty of time to catch some outdoor theatre across Cornwall. Down at the Minack in the far west there’s classics like the Pirate of Penzance and Chicago, whilst Cornwall’s Kneehigh Theatre co will be entertaining with a tail about a giant duck at Heligan. On the edge of Bodmin Moor, Sterts Theatre wind up their season with a selection of thier summer shows.
Discover Cornwall through great walks
A great way to see Cornwall is through walking and it’s coastal paths. From the 8th September the South East Cornwall Walking Festival gives you the chance to experience traditional Cornwall with stunning settings and views. It is a weeklong festival of walks around south east Cornwall taking in seaside villages, rural hamlets, the Tamar Valley and edge of the Bodmin Moor. Discover the Redruth Pasty and Mining Festival
On the 7th to the 9th September in Redruth there is a celebration of the famous icon of Cornwall – the Cornish pasty. The event encompasses the mining history that is inextricably linked to the meal. The event shows the magic of Redruth at the heart of Cornish mining. Events include a Pasty Day, Miner’s Day and Memorial Day. Activities included cookery demonstrations and ‘make your own pasty’, exhibitions, displays, activities, story telling. fancy dress competition, live music and fairground rides.
Enjoy the two week long St Ives September Festival
This wonderful event is taking place from the 8th September, the festival lasts for fifteen days offering a wide range of music, arts and literature events in locations throughout St Ives, attracting visitors from far and wide. In 2018 Seth Lakeman headlines a West Country heavy music lineup including Fishermen’s Friends and Sound of the Sirens. Elsewhere there are 100s of other events planned for this year, including poetry, art exhibitions and workshops, walks.. in fact there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Fantastic Food Festivals
The Newquay Fish Festival is taking place on the weekend of 7th to the 9th September. Now in its 16th year, the event has grown to become one of the South West’s top food festivals attracting more than 20,000 visitors. Whilst over on the Isles of Scilly, the month long Taste of Scilly festival is packed with events sharing the unique low-food miles, slow-food culture of the famously unspoilt archipelago, 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall.
See the changing seasons as you cycle the Camel Trail
The Camel Trail provides access to the beautiful Cornish countryside along a disused railway line that runs from the edge of Bodmin Moor at Wenfordbridge, into Bodmin and onto Wadebridge and Padstow. In September it is particularly beautiful with the beginning of the Autumn changing the colours for the trail that passes through some of the most spectacular countryside in the south west.
Every September, the UK throws open the doors to buildings of every age, style, size and function, as part of Heritage Open Days, giving you the perfect chance to learn more about Cornwall’s past and landscape. This year it takes place over two weekends and in Cornwall between 8th-13th September, you’ll be able to visit Glendurgan Gardens, Kresen Kernow’s new home in Redruth and a variety of interesting places in Liskeard and Launceston amongst nearly 40 places. Visit Poldark film locations
A firm favourite with many of our visitors, Meadow Lakes is just a few miles from Charlestown where they shoot the series!
With season four not long off our screens, September is the perfect time to visit some of the film locations in Cornwall. This includes Church Cove Gunwalloe that relived its smugglings past when Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members and extras descended to film night-time ship wrecking scenes. The cast and crew found themselves on Bodmin Moor for a large part of their time in Cornwall. Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross Poldark’s cottage, Nampara, were shot here along with many capturing the cast on horseback.
